Explore a sunscreen project

A demanding category

SPF is a system, not a single ingredient.

Sunscreen performance emerges from the interaction of UV filters, solvent systems, emulsification, film formation, rheology, processing and the final film on skin. Small formulation choices can materially affect protection, stability and consumer experience.

Our approach brings those variables together from the beginning—creating a stronger technical platform for brands seeking differentiated sun protection.

What makes the technology different

Performance and elegance, designed together.

Patented formulation platforms and hands-on expertise help accelerate development while preserving room for a distinctive brand experience.

01

Efficient protection systems

Thoughtfully engineered UV-filter architectures designed to pursue high-SPF performance with efficient use of approved sunscreen actives.

02

Elegant product aesthetics

Protection is only successful when people want to wear it. Sensory character, rub-in, finish and everyday usability guide the formulation.

03

Patented formulation platforms

Access differentiated patented sunscreen formulations that can provide a stronger technical starting point for product development.

04

Formulator-to-formulator support

Work directly with scientists who understand UV filters, emulsions, film formation, stability, processing and the realities of sunscreen development.

Patented platforms available

A valuable head start—without a one-size-fits-all product.

Beauty Base can make patented sunscreen formulations available as development platforms. We work with your team to determine fit, define the intended product experience and map the technical work required to advance toward commercialization.

Platform availability, permitted use and commercialization terms are addressed for each project. Finished products require appropriate market-specific regulatory review and substantiation testing.

Proprietary switch-emulsion technology

Light on application.
Protective after the switch.

Switch emulsions are proprietary phase-inverting dispersions designed to begin as elegant oil-in-water emulsions and convert to water-in-oil films during rub-in.

Water phase Oil phase Residual filmWater beading signals the switched film
01

Apply

The product begins as an oil-in-water emulsion that spreads easily with a light, non-greasy feel.

02

Rub

Application and water evaporation progressively change the internal phase-volume ratio.

03

Switch

The emulsion inverts to a water-in-oil structure, creating a consumer-perceivable sensory signal.

04

Set

The residual film becomes more water-repellent, supporting wash resistance and efficient sunscreen-film design.

Why it matters

A sensorial signal with technical purpose.

The initial oil-in-water structure supports easy spreading and a light skin feel. As the formula switches, the resulting water-in-oil film has the potential to improve wash resistance, moisturizing properties and SPF efficiency while giving the consumer a noticeable cue during application.

Performance depends on the complete formulation and must be confirmed through appropriate stability, water-resistance and SPF testing.

Formulation controls

Designed through multiple interacting variables.

  • Rubbing time
  • Oil-to-water phase-volume ratio
  • Oil-phase polarity
  • Pickering oil-in-water emulsifier concentration
  • Secondary water-in-oil emulsifier concentration

Measuring the switch

Contact angle makes the transition visible.

The switch can be assessed through contact-angle measurement or a simple water-drop observation on treated skin. A small contact angle is associated with the initial oil-in-water state; increased beading and a higher contact angle indicate formation of the water-in-oil residual film. The curve's inflection point helps characterize switching speed.
